How to Get Discovered By Recruiters in The Beauty Industry
BEAUTYHIRED 2024
This one action changed my entire career…
It was 2009, and my boss asked me to create a LinkedIn profile to boost SEO for our company. At the time, I was an esthetician and front desk manager for a busy medspa in Upstate New York. I quickly created a profile and forgot about it.
Flash forward five years. I had moved from suburbia to Manhattan, trying to level up my career with a big brand. What I quickly learned was:
NYC is expensive.
NYC is highly competitive.
I needed to advance quickly to stay in Manhattan.
Fortunately, I had been updating my LinkedIn profile and connecting with leaders in the beauty industry. Before moving to the city, I used LinkedIn to look up professionals I admired and traced their work history and education to reverse-engineer a roadmap to success.
By consistently updating my profile with relevant information, skills, endorsements, training, and achievements, I doubled my salary in under 2 years. Recruiters were reaching out to me about new roles with corporate companies, who were looking for experienced and qualified candidates in the beauty industry.
This was all because I had kept my Linkedin profile updated with my current role, past positions and all of my beauty industry career achievements and skills.
Below are easy tips you can implement right away to level up your LinkedIn profile, connect with industry professionals, get recruited by top hiring managers, land interviews, and increase your income.
Tips to Get Discovered by Recruiters in the Beauty Industry
1. Create a Robust and Engaging Profile
Complete Key Profile Sections: Fill out all relevant sections, including your headline, experience, education, skills, and location. Think of your profile as your digital resume—it needs to be thorough and polished. Highlight your certifications, training programs, and notable achievements.
Upload a Professional Profile Picture: Choose a high-quality, professional-looking photo. Profiles with photos are 21 times more likely to be viewed. Aim for a clean background and professional attire that reflects your role in the beauty industry.
Craft a Compelling Headline: Customize your headline to showcase your brand and target roles. For example, “Medical Esthetician | Laser Hair Removal | Advanced Skincare Treatments”or “Licensed Esthetician | Skincare Specialist | Anti-Aging Expert.” or “Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner | Botox & Dermal Fillers | Master Injector” or “Director of Virtual Sales | Aesthetic Industry | Client Acquisition.” This is your chance to grab attention—use it to summarize your expertise and what you bring to the table
Write a Clear and Engaging Summary: Share your career story, motivations, and goals. Highlight your skills and accomplishments. This is where you can let your personality shine and tell recruiters why you’re passionate about the beauty industry.
2. Optimize Your Profile with Keywords
Identify Relevant Keywords: Research the most relevant keywords for your desired position. For example, estheticians might use “Microneedling, Laser Hair Removal, CoolSculpting,” while nurses might use “Botox, Juvederm, Aesthetic Nurse Injector.” Look at job postings and see what keywords keep popping up—that’s your clue.
Incorporate Keywords Throughout Your Profile: Use these keywords in your headline, summary, and experience sections to appear in more search results. Creating a “specialties” paragraph is a great way to include multiple keywords naturally without sounding spammy.
3. Showcase Your Work Experience and Achievements
List Your Current and Past Positions: Update your profile with your current and previous positions, including relevant job titles, company names, and employment dates. Highlight positions most relevant to the role you’re seeking.
Highlight Your Accomplishments: Use the formula ACTIONS = RESULTS to detail your impact in each role. Focus on achievements that will resonate with recruiters, such as increasing client retention rates, enhancing customer satisfaction, or boosting sales.
4. Emphasize Your Skills and Expertise
List Relevant Skills: Include both technical and soft skills. For estheticians, this might include “Microneedling, Chemical Peels, Dermaplaning.” For spa managers, list skills like “Multi-Unit management, Customer Service, Inventory Management.” Skills should be directly related to the roles you’re targeting.
Endorse and Request Endorsements: Endorse others for their skills and request endorsements in return. This validates your skills and makes your profile more credible. Don’t be shy about asking colleagues or clients to endorse you.
5. Expand Your Network and Engage with Others
Connect with Professionals in Your Field: Build your network by connecting with industry professionals, former colleagues, and influencers. A diverse network increases your visibility and opens doors to new opportunities. Connect with leaders in the beauty industry, including hiring managers, founders, CEOs, and recruiters. Pro-tip: send a direct message when connecting, complimenting their experience and their brand.
Be Socially Engaged: Like, comment on, and share posts to demonstrate your engagement and stay informed about industry trends. This activity makes you more attractive to recruiters and helps build relationships within your network.
6. Utilize LinkedIn's Job-Seeking Features
Turn on “Open to New Opportunities”: Signal to recruiters that you’re open to new roles. This can increase your chances of being contacted for job opportunities. It’s discreet and effective!
Leverage Job Recommendations: LinkedIn provides personalized job recommendations based on your profile. Keep your profile up to date to receive relevant job suggestions. The more precise your profile, the better the recommendations.
7. Additional Tips for Success
Include Contact Information: Make it easy for recruiters to contact you by providing your email address or phone number. Don’t make them hunt for ways to reach out.
Update Your Profile Regularly: Keep your profile fresh by updating it with new accomplishments or changes in your career. This ensures that your profile remains relevant and accurately reflects your current skills, experience, and goals.
Customize Your LinkedIn URL: Create a custom URL to make your profile look more professional and easier to find. This simple step makes a big difference in your personal branding.
By implementing these tips, you will instantly become discoverable to top beauty industry leaders, hiring managers, and recruiters. You are one step closer to getting discovered for your next big role in the beauty industry.
